Sheep Farming

by | 4 Feb, 2022

We have been really busy on the farm this week looking after the resident sheep.

The 2 rams have been removed from the field with the ewes as they have now done their job and can have some relaxation time. We will be scanning all 100 ewes in March to see which are in lamb and potentially how many lambs we can expect in May when they will be due to give birth. All our ewes will give birth outside unless there is a problem and she needs help then we will bring her inside to assist.

We also have 100 lambs who received a check up and were given some multivitamins to keep them in good health. We have moved them onto fresh cover crops which they love, we will keep moving them so they are always on new ground.

Redhouse Farm has not been a stock farm for a long time and there are no permanent fences so we have to use electric fencing. This is quite a manual job to create the fields and then also collecting it up once that area has been grazed enough. It involves planning ahead in terms of when the sheep will need moving and where the next grazing will be.
