We have just welcomed 50 Romney gimmers onto the farm as part of our new venture to become sheep farmers.
We will gradually be building up our sheep numbers by purchasing good quality tups which will run with the ewes later in the year so they produce lambs next spring.
Having sheep means we can now introduce grass leys into our rotation, this offers a good opportunity to improve the soil structure and increase organic matter, which helps to reduce our reliance on chemicals.
The Romney is a long wool type breed which originated in England around 1800, the first export was in 1853 to New Zealand.
